Dr. Kamal is a recognized pathologist trained in cytopathology at AIIMS New Delhi and Has worked as the HOD of the Pathology department of Government Medical College of Nagpur. She has held many a regional, state & national elected prestigious positions including the President of Indian Academy of Cytologists (IAC), Founder Chairperson of Association of Cytologists of Maharashtra, Co- ordinator for fellowship in Cytopathology – Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, and the Co-opted Fellow – International Clinical Epidemiological Network, Philadelphia. She has many awards and honors to her credit conferred by various state and national pathology and cytology associations, the highest being the Dr. P. N. Wahi oration, Ernest Fernandes slide seminar and best paper award by by Indian Academy of Cytologists. During her pioneering journey of 40 years in cytopathology she has primarily mastered, advocated & established various techniques in cytology at different medical colleges & hospitals . Her areas of interest and expertise include FNAC of breast, lymph nodes, salivary gland, thyroid, and has original work in techniques like non-aspiration cytology, saline rehydration of cervical smears and ultrafast Pap staining for intra-operative cytology. Her scholarly activities include >50 research articles in peer reviewed journals, has authored chapter in the book of ‘Cytology and Colposcopy in Gynaecological Practice’ and published manuals in regional language regarding screening for cancer cervix for staff of nursing schools. Cervical cytology has been her forte. She has received research grants from various organizations like the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) Philadelphia, Chitnavis trust and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and has worked both in the fields and hospitals to investigate the efficacy of visual screening strategies for cancer cervix.

She has worked with ICMR grant in Urine Cytology in dye workers and Colposcopic follow up of women with ASC-US. She has given talks and presentations at numerous National and International cytology conferences held at Yokohama & Edenborough and in workshops, symposia and teleconferences. She has been a dedicated teacher and believes in teaching through hands on cytology workshops that she has held both in FNAC & in cervical cytology and colposcopy. Her community service activities in cervical cancer screening has culminated in the establishment of a Cytology Clinic in a women’s hospital run by a trust at Nagpur.
